Eyelets reinforce holes in fabric so they do not tear when a cord, lace, or hook is passed through them. They are used for clothing, bags, belts, shoes, awnings, and tarpaulins.
Types of eyelets
- Dome eyelets – with a rounded top; a classic look for clothing and bags.
- Flat eyelets – clean, suitable for minimalist designs.
- Oval eyelets – for wide straps and belts where a round eyelet is impractical.
- Eyelets with washers – with an additional metal washer underneath for greater strength (tarpaulins, awnings).
You can find all models in the Eyelets category in gunmetal, gold, silver, and black oxide finishes.
What you need
- eyelets with washers in the appropriate size;
- a hole punch;
- a setting tool kit (die and anvil) or a manual press;
- a hammer and a hard surface.
Steps
- Mark the spot for the eyelet.
- Punch a hole slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the eyelet barrel.
- Insert the eyelet from the right side of the fabric through the hole.
- Place the washer on the back side.
- Place the eyelet on the anvil, insert the die into the barrel, and strike with the hammer until the barrel folds over and secures the washer.
How to choose the size
The inner opening of the eyelet should be slightly larger than the cord or lace passing through it. For clothing with drawstrings – 4–6 mm, for bags and belts – 8–12 mm, for tarpaulins and awnings – 15 mm or larger.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be done without a tool?
It is not recommended – without a die, the eyelet will not fold evenly and will not hold.
