Woven vs Printed Labels – Key Differences and How to Choose

Woven vs printed labels is the first decision anyone launching a clothing brand has to make. Both look professional, but they differ in how they are made, how they feel, how much detail they hold and how much they cost. In this guide we compare jacquard woven labels with printed satin and canvas labels so you can choose the right one for your product.

How a woven (jacquard) label is made

On a woven label the logo and text are not applied on top – they are woven into the tape itself. A jacquard loom interlaces coloured polyester yarns into the base fabric to form the design. The result offers:

  • outstanding durability – the design cannot rub off or fade because it is part of the fabric;
  • a premium look – a subtle raised texture and dense hand-feel;
  • limited fine detail – very thin lines and text smaller than about 1.5–2 mm tend to get lost;
  • a limited colour count – usually up to 6–8 colours per design.

Woven labels are the standard choice for the brand label at the neck of T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and jeans. At Bul-tex you'll find jacquard designs from small 3 x 3 cm and 4 x 4 cm up to 10 x 9 cm, as well as folded versions for sewing into a seam.

How a printed label is made

A printed label is a tape – satin, cotton canvas or polyester – onto which the design is applied by thermal transfer, digital or screen printing. Its advantages are:

  • high detail – tiny text, gradients and complex logos reproduce sharply;
  • more room for text – ideal for composition, care symbols and size;
  • softness – satin and canvas in particular feel smooth against the skin;
  • lower unit price for the same size.

The trade-off is that very harsh washing or high-temperature ironing can gradually fade the print, which is why most brands prefer a woven label for the visible logo.

Which label should you choose?

  1. For the main logo label – a woven jacquard label, especially on outerwear and denim.
  2. For the care label – printed satin, as it fits plenty of text and stays soft.
  3. For handmade items and kidswear – printed canvas with its matte, natural look.
  4. For an outside accent – a small metal plate or a decorative woven tab in the side seam.

Many brands combine the two: a woven logo label at the neck and a printed satin care label in the side seam. Also consider the label fold – straight cut, centre fold or end fold – because it determines how the label is sewn on.

Before ordering, think about the base colour too. A black or navy base with white or gold lettering is a classic choice for woven labels, while natural canvas complements organic fabrics. If you are unsure, start with a modest size that suits most of your styles – that way one label can serve your whole collection.

Frequently asked questions

Are woven labels itchy?

Modern high-density jacquard labels with heat-sealed edges are soft. Itchiness usually comes from stiff, roughly cut edges, so choose a folded label or one with sealed edges.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

Custom labels are produced in batches – for most designs at Bul-tex the minimum is 500 or 1,000 pieces, as stated in each product description.

Can printed labels be ironed?

Yes, at a moderate temperature. Iron from the reverse side or through a pressing cloth to protect the print.
