Types of zippers – coil, metal, open-end and closed-end

A zipper may seem simple, but there are many types that vary by tooth material, opening style, and size. Choosing the right one ensures comfort and a long lifespan for the garment.

By tooth type

  • Coil (nylon) zippers – the teeth are a polyester coil. Lightweight, flexible, and quiet. Suitable for dresses, skirts, trousers, pillows, and bags. See our coil zippers in dozens of colors.
  • Metal zippers – the teeth are made of brass or aluminum. The strongest, with a classic look. Used for jeans, jackets, workwear, and bags. Browse our T5 metal zippers with gold and silver teeth.
  • Plastic (vislon) zippers – large plastic teeth; for sports jackets and backpacks.
  • Concealed zippers – a coil zipper where the teeth are not visible; for dresses and skirts.

Separating or non-separating

A non-separating zipper is closed at the bottom end – used for trousers, skirts, dresses, pockets, and bags. A separating zipper splits completely into two parts and is essential for jackets, cardigans, and sweatshirts.

What the numbers mean (3, 5, T5, 8)

The number indicates the width of the closed teeth in millimeters. #3 is a fine zipper for dresses and light clothing, #5 (T5) is the most versatile – for jeans, jackets, and bags, and #8 and above – for heavy-duty jackets, tents, and luggage.

How to choose the length

Measure the opening where the zipper will be sewn. The zipper can be slightly longer – the excess is hidden in the seam – but never shorter.

Frequently asked questions

A metal zipper size #5 or larger.

Can a coil zipper be used for jeans?
