Trouser hooks – what they are and how to attach them

If you look at the waistband of quality men's trousers, you will likely see not a button, but a metal hook – a trouser hook. It makes the fastening more secure and gives it a cleaner look.

What is a trouser hook

A trouser hook is a two-piece metal fastener consisting of a hook and an eye (bar). The hook catches onto the eye and holds the waistband tight, without a visible button. It is primarily used on suit trousers, skirts, and uniforms.

Advantages

  • Stronger than a button – it does not tear off under tension.
  • Flat and clean waistband without a bulge.
  • Invisible from the outside – suitable for formal wear.

Types of trouser hooks

  • For men's trousers – wider and more robust (e.g., model AG 010).
  • For women's trousers and skirts – smaller and more delicate (e.g., AG 005).
  • According to the finish – Black Oxide, Gun Metal, Gold, Light Gold, and nickel, to match the zipper and other hardware.

How to install a trouser hook

  • Mark the positions for the hook (on the outer waistband) and the eye (on the inner waistband) by fastening the waistband at the desired width.
  • Pronged hooks are pushed through the fabric, and the prongs are bent with pliers or a press on the reverse side.
  • Sew-on hooks are attached through the eyelets with 4–6 stitches.
  • Check the fastening – the hook should slide in easily but not come undone on its own.
