The buttons on a shirt are visible with every movement – which is why the right choice can make even a simple shirt look expensive. Here is what to pay attention to.
How many buttons does a shirt have
A classic men's shirt usually has 7–8 buttons on the front, 1–2 on each cuff, and sometimes 2 small buttons on the collar (button-down) plus one spare. A total of 12–15 buttons. Order 1–2 extra.
Size
- Collar (button-down) – 14L (9 mm)
- Cuffs – 16L–18L (10–11.5 mm)
- Front – 18L (11.5 mm), for thicker shirts 20L (12.5 mm)
Material
- Mother of pearl – natural luster, the most luxurious choice for formal shirts.
- Polyester with a pearl effect – looks like mother of pearl but is cheaper and more durable; ideal for mass production.
- Coconut and wood – for linen and summer shirts with a natural style.
- Metal – for denim and work shirts.
Color
For white and light-colored shirts – white or mother of pearl buttons. For colored shirts, you can choose a button in a matching or contrasting color for a modern accent. It is important that the buttons on the collar, cuffs, and front are of the same model.
2 or 4 holes?
Four holes are traditional for classic shirts and are more durable, while two are more modern and minimalist. Both options are suitable.
