The buckle is both a fastener and a decoration. A properly chosen buckle can turn an ordinary belt or dress into a statement piece of an outfit.
Types of buckles
- Metal buckles – in nickel, gold, and gunmetal; durable and elegant, for belts, bags, and shoes.
- Polyester buckles – lightweight, in various colors and effects (marble, horn); for dresses and coats.
- Covered buckles – covered with fabric or leather to match the garment.
- Ring-style buckles – open models without a prong, for decorative belts.
How to choose the size
The size of a buckle is determined by the inner opening through which the belt passes. It should be equal to or 1–2 mm larger than the width of the belt. For example, for a 3 cm belt, choose a buckle with a 3 cm opening.
How to attach a buckle to a belt
- Pass the end of the belt through the buckle.
- For a buckle with a prong, punch a hole for the prong 3–4 cm from the end.
- Fold the end back and sew it or secure it with a stud or rivet.
- Punch fastening holes at equal distances (usually 2.5 cm).
Buckles on a dress or coat
Pass the fabric belt through the buckle, fold back 3–4 cm, and sew it with several rows of stitching. For covered buckles, choose a fabric that matches the dress.
